Question

return to workplace

My photos are arranged chronogically, but sometimes I take photos of old maps or old photos.  They are positioned chronologically as to when I took the photo, but I then want to change the date to match the historic map or photo so it would be in the correct historic chronological order.  So, I replace the date.  That all works fine, but it leaves me way back at the historic date instead of where I was when I decided to correct the date.  Is there an easy way for me to return to the original chronological position where the photo used to be?   In case this is confusing, here is an example.  In 2010, I photo-copied 5 historic aerial photos all from different dates in the 1930s-40s.  They all sat as 2010 photos for 12 years.  Now I want to redate them all - one is from 1937, 1942, 1948, etc.  When I did the first one, I was left in 1937.  Now I want to go back to 2010 to work on the second one.  How do I get back to the aerials in 2010 to work on the next one (the slider is very inprecise to get to a specific date).  I have to do this a lot, and I waste a huge amount of time trying to return to where I was previously working.  Help??

Try the following:

  • Create a working Album e.g. named Misdated Photos
  • Add the photos you want to adjust to the Album
  • Adjust the dates of each photo in the Album
  • Remove the photos from the Album

The photos will remain in view in the Album until you remove them.

As an alternative, if all of the photos to adjust are in a single folder, you could select the folder in the Folder panel and use the Sort by:file name option. The photos will remain in place after the date adjustment.

Good ideas - thanks!  I've never used "albums" - all my photos are simply in chronological order.  I guess I could also add a keyword tag to those I want to redate and work through them in the same way I would from a "misdated photo album".   Thanks again!

@Dana C. Bryan said:  Thanks - I didn’t understand!

Since you are replying via email, and therefore wouldn't see the screenshot in my earlier reply to your post, I don't understand whether you are not understanding my post, or simply didn't understand how to use the Timeline.  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.  If you didn't understand my suggestion, take a look at my screenshot on the forum.

Sorry, Greg!  My apology was intended for Jane who pointed out that I should have been on the Elements page.  I haven’t had the time to try your suggestion yet.

Greg - I just tried the slide-timeline and I appreciate you mentioning it because I had never seen it or tried it.  I will keep it in mind, but it does not help with my current dilemma.  Just now, I was working back through my collection and came to a photo I downloaded in early 2021 from the state archives for a program I was giving.  But now I am trying to put it in its correct chronological order, and it was a 1951 photo.  So I changed the date to 1951 and Elements zoomed the photo (and me) back to 1951.  So my problem is finding a way to easily get back to early 2021 to the exact place I was, so I can continue doing the same to the next photo that needs redating.  With the slide-timeline, it took forever to get back 70 years (8-9 years at a time), plus I still had to remember the exact date where I needed to go, which changes on every photo I want to redate.  What I want from the software is a simple click to take me back to where I previously was.

Press Ctrl+L to toggle the Timeline off and on.  Your photos are arranged by month and year in the bars.  Click on a bar and it will take you to the month you want.

@Dana C. Bryan

Are you doing this in Adobe Photoshop? Or Windows File Explorer, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Lightroom, or ?? Can we see a screenshot?

Elements 15.  Screenshop of what?  I want to know how I can refind my place after I redate a photo and am shifted to the new date.

@Dana C. Bryan

You posted to the Photoshop forum, which is why your question didn't make sense to me! I'll move your post to the Photoshop Elements forum for you.
