Saving scanned photos results in two files being saved

I'm scanning a bunch of photos into Elements. I always do a preview first so that the whole flatbed isn't scanned, just the photo itself. For some reason, Elements is saving the preview with names like "img_001.bmp". I never save my files as .bmp files but as .jpg files. Why is it doing this? I will have to go back and delete all those .bmp files. Is this a setting? If so, I couldn't find it. Thanks for your help.

I have a very vague recollection of this happening to me many years ago. The scanner saved a copy of the preview scan. Does this happen if you don't run a scan preview? If not, perhaps there is an option in the scanner driver to prevent this from happening with a preview scan.

You are right. The problem with not doing a preview is that the scanner does its whole bed, not just the photo. For some reason, the preview is able to close in on the photo on the bed. ???? I don't know if it makes a difference in how the photo ends up if I have to crop the image heavily after doing the scan or not (if I don't do the preview). I just am baffled why I can't change this behavior. If you or anyone has ideas, I'd appreciate them.

The Save As dialog shows that the files are being saved as img.bmp. The file name will be changed by the OS to read IMG01.bmp etc. in each folder.

Yes, but on that screen I always change the file type to .upgrade and give the file a new name..And I'm still getting a file saved as a .bmp.

I use scanspeeder pro to do all my scanning- a very simple interface, plus, scan three things, like old postcards all at once, and you choose what format you want the scans done in and you can also have a TIFF (it's uncompressed) made as well, and the images get automatically separated. I had to scan in over 400 post cards so I didn't hesitiate to get the pro version for something like $39- best scanner software I've ever had. It's replaced by beloved paperport 14- which used to be the top dog in the scanner game.

Instead of deleting the bmp files, you could use the Editor's File>Process Multiple Files dialog to convert them to jpegs.

What version of Elements and OS are you using? And are you using the Organizer or the Editor to scan?

I believe the format depends on the settings in your scanner. I just tried scanning on my machine with Elements 2025 and could not find an option for saving as .bmp.

Thanks for your reply. I use Windows 11. I have Elements 25. My first scan screen looks like what you posted as "WIA support". However after that my screens are completely different. I will attach them. I am using a Brother printer/scanner.

And I don't want to convert the .bmps to .jpgs as that is how I saved them! I'm ending up with two copies of the same photo.
