scratch disk are full

My student is using Elements 13 on a Mac running OS 10.11.6.  He can't even make a duplicate layer of the background of an image without being told that the "scratch disks are full.

What does this mean?

Friends, thanks for your input.  the student referred to here, called Apple and found out that he was inadvertently letting "IPhoto" grab all of this images.  Consequently, his scratch disks are full!

He was told to move those images to his external drive.  They will call him back and show him how to delete the files from his hard drive.

I instructed him to ask them to help him turn off the auto-downloading feature of iPhoto!!

I wasn't aware that he was using it.  I regularly instruct my new students on the Mac Operating system not to let iPhoto auto download their images.  Once the become Adobe users, they need to take a "turn in the road" and leave Iphoto behind!

Hi Mary Lou!  I took a seminar with you five years ago and am still going strong with pictures and editing.

The first thing to check is how much free space is on the hard drive.

Apple menu>About This Mac>Storage

Photoshop elements creates a scratch disk when running and there needs to be space on the drive for it.

There are lots of factors that determine how much free space one needs, but i would try to keep at least 20 gb free.

This is a rather new laptop and he has been using an external drive to store his images.  He has hardly used any of the laptops hard drive and he still has over 500 GB of external drive space.

Since I left the first message, he shut down and restarted and upon restarting the Mac notified him that his scratch disks are almost full!

What matters is how much free space is on the macs internal drive.

So it sounds like he needs to clear some space off the macs internal drive.

I would check the Photos application cause that thing sucks up drive space quick if not set right.
