selections turning red

This problem started suddenly. in PSE12 on mac os10.  when using quick selection, a boundary box appears, turns red, then slowly fades to black.  Other selection tools have different but similar results. I have tried resetting preferences, I have uninstalled that app, downloaded and re-installed a new one, same result.

tried some other suggestions but nothing has fixed this problem.

    Try resetting all tools to default.

    I think that in your version of PSE, there is a little arrow, top left, on the tool's option bar. Click on it to reset.

    More recent versions of PSE have a box with lines in it on the right on the tool's option bar. Click on this if appropriate.

    sorry, I didn't mention that I have tried resetting tool options several times, just tried it again- no success.

    2 days later-  that's it?  no one has any thoughts or suggestions or I am missing something?
