I have a message 'No media available. Please clear applied filter and try again.'

As far as I am aware there are no 'applied filters' and no selected albums or tags. What is the problem'

Try pressing Ctrl+1. This is a toggle switch that you may have pressed by mistake and removed all photos from view.
