Simplify layer is grayed out in PSE 2023?

I just downloaed PSE 2023 and the first thing I tried to do - simplify a text layer - wouldn't work, it's grayed out.

 

Anyone know why or how to fix it?

Definitely in expert mode...

If your not in Expert mode in the pse 2023 editor, many commands are greyed out.

I think I figured this out.

 

I was working on a file that I created in PSE 2022. When I recreated a similar file in PSE 2023, it works fine. There must be some type of un-compatible situation between the two... maybe because of the switch to the Apple silicon/M1 base code?
