Question

There is a missmatch of resolution (DPI) in Cropping Tool compared to the cropping result

Adobe Photoshop Elements 2026. I have cropped an image successfully to 10cm x 10cm and 300dpi. When I change the size to 12cm x 10 cm the input box still shows 300dpi. After cropping the next picture (or the same picture) with this setting it does not have 300dpi like intended. Instead there is a random result like 178 dpi in the example. This bug is present for other sizes. As soon as you change one of the dimensions, the DPI setting wont be applied correctly.

Let me claify my issue with more screenshots. Take any picture and crop it to 15 cm x 10 cm 300 ppi

Check bottom left and you will see the set parameters have been cropped.

Change the cropping width to 10 cm and do not modify the other inputs. So you intend to crop 10cm x 10 cm at 300 ppi. Crop another part of the picture with the new settings:

The result is 10cm x 10 cm 88,392 ppi which is different from what you have set in your cropping settings.

DPI is a term that applies to printers, not images.   Images use PPI (pixels per inch).

I cannot duplicate your issue so that makes me think it’s a simple fix.

Click on what the arrow is pointing to, then restart the editor.

    Hi Glenn,

first of all you are right. I am talking about PPI (not DPI), this was lost in translation.

I have tried resetting the preferences but the issue is still present for me.

Since you said you cant reproduce I want to show you my problem in more detail:

Take any picture, in my case 33.87cm x 25,4cm 72ppi:

    Set cropping parameter to 15cm x 10 cm x 300 dpi

Crop any part of the picture

The desired 15 cm x 10 cm 300ppi were successfully cropped!

Change the width to 10 cm and do not change the other inputs. So you have 10 cm x 10 cm 300ppi.

Crop any part of the picture.

You result with 10 cm x 10 cm and 263,906 ppi.

For me this is a bug because my input clearly states 300 dpi but it is resulting in 263,906 dpi.

Hopefully this helps you to understand the issue. Please let me know if it is the same for you!

    Why not take your original image (33.87cm x 25,4cm @72ppi) and crop the portion you want to 10cm  x 10cm @ 300ppi?)

You will then avoid multiple resampling.

Alternatively go to Edit > Preferences > General

Choose classic crop mode and that will show whether there is a difference with the new GPU powered crop tool.
