Unable to rename folders

I cannot rename folders of newly imported photos.  I get a message:  unable to rename folder. may contain invalid characters, read only location, or existing folder having same name.  I have no idea what characters would be invalid or read only location mean.  I do not have anything with the same name in any folders.

Were you able to figure this out? I'm having the same problem. I just downloaded Photoshop and only have renamed 2 folders so far. (Like literally, other than uploading a batch of pictures from vacation, it's the only thing I've done in the program so far.) Upon trying to rename the 3rd folder, I received the same message as you. I can guarantee there isn't another folder with the same name. I'm trying to rename it using the same pattern as the last 2 folders (name of place followed by date, and the date is a different than the other folders), so there isn't any reason for this message to appear and prevent me from renaming the folder. Frustrating.

Update: For me, the problem turned out to be OneDrive. Because I had just uploaded the photos, it was syncing that particular folder when I was trying to rename it. Once the folder was synced to OneDrive, I was able to rename it.

Hope this helps someone in the future!

It's most probably because you already have existing folders with the same name. It's not existing files with the same name in other folders. For newly imported photos, it can't be a read-only file location. If your folder names includ only letters, numbers and spaces it can't be 'invalid' characters either.

Thank you for replying to my post so quickly. Unfortunately I have no folders with the names I am attempting to use. The characters are usually something simple such as Birthday2018 so I can’t see any invalid ones. I will load new photos and where they are listed under a date I will attempt to rename them and cannot do so. I can, however, create an instant album from the same group of photos so I’m still stumped. I have had 4 versions of elements and this 2018 and 2015 version have both given me the same problem.

An album has nothing to do with folders. It's only a 'playlist', a list of files stored in the catalog.

What would happen if you tried to renamed such a folder from the Explorer or Finder?

    - would in work in explorer or finder?

    - if so, the files in the folder would appear as 'missing' in the organizer. What would happen if you used the reconnect function by browsing to the correct folder?
