Using mask layers in photoshop elements

Hello everyone,

I am curious about who among us  understands using mask layers  in PSE.

I for  one have  treid numerous times, looked SO many  tutorials and  I just DO NOT understand the  process at all. At this  juncture  I have  totally given up on ever understaning the concept. My thought processes just do not comprehend this  feature no matter  how  I try. I enjoy using PSE and  I have  had  several vesions of  this  software. I use  layers, I use  selections, I can combine photos for  composites using layers and  selections. But layer masks. NO longer  an option or  a  choice  for  me.

Maybe  I am just a very odd person, I don't know. Any thoughts???
