using the brush

Hi all i have opened a photo and then go to the brush icon and click on types of brush and the hole system freezes. i can not pick what size of brush to use, where am i going wrong, i have deleted photoshop and reinstalled it still dos the same its probably something simple. by the way it takes me 1/2 an hr to insert a picture on email so im not a computer wizard kind regards steve
