View >print size, but it doesn't

How does "view print size" work?

I choose file>print>paper size

When I choose view >print size for an image to be printed at A3, A4, or A5 (chosen in paper size), the view on my screen does not change.  I want to see what it will look like when printed.

What is going wrong? The "view> print size" option is not mentioned in the FAQ/help file. Has the option been removed without removing the menu entry?

Win10 64bit, Photoshop Elements 14. 2 Samsung monitors (S24F350) whose size and resolution (1920x1080) are known to Windows and thus to Photoshop.

The image is a ca 1.8 GB TIFF file.

    No, Windows and Elements know the resolution (1920 x 1080) but not the size in inches/cm.

    Anyway, that's the same old question about 'print size'.

    For the feature to work you have set your preferences in the menu Edit >> Preferences >> Units and Rulers. The default screen resolution is 72... which is an old value, not the resolution of your display.

    I have a 1920 x 1200 display in 24" diagonal size. So, the width of the screen is 20 " for 1920 pixels. My screen resolution is 1920 / 20 = 96 ppi. I enter 96 instead of 72 in the above preference dialog. Now, the preview on the display matches the print size.

    I am astonished that Windows (and Photoshop), when it interrogates the plugged in display and identifies the make and model, does not discover the specifications e.g. width x height or resolution, of the display.

    I followed your instructions.

    When I changed the resolution to 36.8 ppcm, the image on the screen matched the size of the original scan size much more closely.

    However changing the paper size from A3 to A4 made no difference to the view>print size.

    It seems as though the first problem lies in the Print>print size. If I choose paper size A4, the print size does not alter - it still shows the actual, A3, size.  But the print size cannot be more than the page size and is usually significantly less because of paper handling restrictions. The rollers in my printer which has a maximum paper size of ca A4 could not cope with an A3 width of print size.

    If I choose A4 paper size then go to more options>custom print size>scale to fit media, the print preview shows the whole image within the print frame and print size shows custom.  But if I go back to view>print size, the screen view does not alter and is way bigger than an A4 sheet of paper.

    So it looks as though there is little or no integration between these various tools.

    And why is there nothing in the help files about dealing with the issue?
