Question

There is no doubt now that the problem was caused by the latest Windows 10 update. It appears in PSE14, PSE15 and PSE2018 as well in Photoshop and probably other third-party softwares.

Most of the users have found the registry edit to be effective. It is not known if the few for which it has not worked have done it properly or if they have other differences in their configuration or hardware.

Since Adobe say they are working on a solution, that can mean an update to the current version or a correction in the next one. It's highly unlikely that Adobe can provide a 'patch' working with older versions, a new update by Microsoft seems more likely to me.

On MIcrosoft side, the problem is that even if you can roll back to a previous Win 10 version, you'll be forced to update again later.

On Adobe side, don't dream: they'll provide a "Lösung" for current Elements versions...  They don't support older versions (that's in the license terms you agreed to). To summarize, check if you can roll back to an older Windows version (a temporary solution only) and anyway give some details about how you updated the registry.

Thanks for your lenghty answer, MichelBParis on that topic!

I tried again and again to solve this myself and I just finally was successful with the registry solution. Maybe that will help other users:

My first attempt was to completely uninstall PSE with the windows tools and then install it again. This showed no success and the registry was still looking the same and the problem was not solved, even when I inserted the correct DWORD entry.

Now I did the same again, but included one more step (after securing my old registry):

    1. I uninstalled PSE with windows uninstallment tools.

    2. I opened the registry and manually deleted the "Photoshop Elements" entries completely.

    3. I reinstalled PSE - the problem then occured again and the system information showed once again that I got only 8 MB RAM for PSE. Then I closed the program again.

    4. I opened the registry again and inserted the new 32bit DWORD entry (OverridePhysicalMemoryMB) and changed the binary value to 4014, which resembles my systems value.

    5. I opened PSE again and it showed me the right values now: 3650 MB RAM which I can use (70%).

Everything works again as it should! So I am really grateful for that solution now, too.

But: I still think that problems like that should not occur in a way like that. If they do, then some quick fix should be provided. I am glad, that I have some computer skills and dare to fool around in the registry. But many users do not dare to take these steps and they will never get their software working again. A software foe which they paid quite a lot of money.

I will close this thread as successfully answered and resolved. May the steps I provided help others as well!

Since you have computer skills (and you prove it) you understand that the software developpers can't take care of future changes in the OS, and that it's rarely technically possible to create simple patches, and even more to create patches working for all previous versions. The deployment of those free patches has also a cost and is often prone to introducing new bugs.

So, users of new shoftwares should be aware that they'll have to 'keep current' (See all issues with updates from Microsoft and Apple as well issues with new hardware technologies). Unfortunately, that has a cost. We, Elements users, don't get the frequent updates available with the subscription model of Photoshop CC and Lightroom.

May the steps I provided help others as well!

Amen! and thanks for your useful feedback!
