What's going on with Photoshop Elements 12?

In October, the text on all the menus disappeared and I couldn't use Photoshop Elements 12 (Windows 10).  Then, there was an update and everything worked fine again.  Now, it's broken again.  The program is freezing up when I open files  directly with Photoshop, and when I open the program by itself, the text is, once again, missing from the menus.

You can imagine that not a single program line of Elements 12 has been changed...  Its basis, the OS is changing. There has been a number of issues in many softwares, not only PSE12, not only Adobe softwares following various Windows 10 automatic updates.

That's particularly common for issues with the 'text engine', particularly the way that the 'cache' for fonts is handled.

Some workarounds have been widely discussed in Microsoft and Adobe forums, but some of them no longer work when you close your computer.

You'll find many posts about going back to previous Windows 10 versions, but that won't solve your problem indefinitely.

What is widely reported now is that Microsoft has solved the problem with the latest 'Fall edition' version. It's not yet generalized for all users, you may have to start the update manually. If the Windows 10 version is not 'build 1709', the update should solve your problem. I can't testify myself because I never suffured from the issue - I only use default fonts. Be aware that the update is a major one, and requires 2 to 3 hours and several automatic reboots.

I have WIN 10 build 1709.  PSE stopped working after the 1709 update; it would not even come up.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled PSE 12 and it still won't even come up.

????

PSE12 still works fine here with the 1709 upgrade.

The purpose of that upgrade is for people having problems with the fonts.

I would not be surprised if your (different) issue was triggered by an antivirus upgrade.

"If the Windows 10 version is not 'build 1709', the update should solve your problem. If the Windows 10 version is not 'build 1709', the update should solve your problem."

The 1709 Build works?  Or the 1709 build breaks PSE 12?  Can you clarify your sentence here?  Thanks.
