When I open a NEF file after making adjustments in ACR noise appears in the image?

This is a new phenomenon. All of a sudden I am getting a lot of noise in my images after opening through ACR. I open the NEF file in ACR, make my normal adjustments to get the histogram right, then "Open Image." Once I do, the image has a lot of noise, even those shot in bright light. (Images shot in low light have more noise.)

Would appreciate help.

Thank you!

Are you using the detail tab in ACR? It’s the middle tab between the camera and aperture icons. The Luminance slider will usually adjust noise. If you hold down the Alt key while moving the masking slider you should see a b&w representation of noise/what is being sharpened. Try pushing the masking slider to the right to reduce visible artefacts so that sharpening is only applied to white edges.
