Question

When will PSE 2023 be Silicon native?

I had high hopes for PhotoShop Elements 2023 for my new Mac M2max. The trial download went well, but Apple OS 13.4 wanted to invoke Rosetta to translate and run it. Translators and emulators eat storage, run apps slower, and are prone to premature non-support. I de-installed it immediately. The 6/21/2023 screen shot boasting M1+ performance seems highly misleading, "full support" (yep, I grant, that's not native, but still...). Somewhere in Adobe's pages and these forums, I found an October 2022 post assuring it would be "native." When, 2/32/2032? What gives?

(I taught earler digital photo editors, then full PS and PSE for decades. I have kept 2 Intel Macs, one  with solid PSE-8, and one with freaky PSE-2022.)

I believe the actual photoshop elements editor is Apple silicon and the organizer is iOS , but some of the required functions like running certain filters, etc still require Intel code to run, which is why Rosetta is still apparently needed.

You can go to Apple>About This Mac>More Info>System Report>Applications and see what it says.

I wouldn't be weary of installing Rostta 2.

We haven't heard of any real issues caused by installing and/or using Rosetta 2 here on the forums.

Thanks. I might break down and get PSE 2023 even if it does have to limp
along with Rosetta.

Fyi, PSE2022 v20.0 April 2022, ported to the M2 Mac OS13 from an Intel Mac
OS12, invoked Rosetta, ran normally once, and persistently locks up on the
touchy-feely home screen, unable to invoke the editor even after re-starts.
I de-installed it and declined to download again, for now anyway.

I'm using PSE8 on a 2010 Mac offline and sneakernet-flashdrive for things I
cannot do with Apple Pictures (and color correction in a way that worked
for 14+ years but vanished from the 64-bit versions).

Hi John,

I hope you don't mind a Windows user to take part in your conversation...

At least on Windows, the equivalent of  'color variations' is still there in the appropriate 'Quick view' which is targetted to beginners. Just select the 'color' section on the right panel.

The reason it was  taken down in the 'expert' view is that it was practically no longer used because there are now many more more correction tools which are faster and more precise, including editing in camera raw. Most flexible and precise tools, including for batch color correction of photos taken in the same lighting conditions.

My personal view is that color variations don't help at all new users to understand lighting and lighting correction. Our mileage may vary (working with PSE since 1999).
