Why does photomerge in PSE 2018 not work?

It worked good in PSE 14 (and older since I started with PSE 6), but in 2018

1. I get a lot of "could not merge" failure messages. It seems like the two images not merge, but simply are put on the top of each other.

2. When I try to merge two images of tall buidings I am used to get a portrait result. But in 2018 I get a horisontal result and the image is landscape result and the buiiding is compressed and all persons changed to fat dwarfs.

I would prefer to fix 2018, but contingency plan is to reinstall PSE14 and get er refund for my 2018 payment.

What can I do?
