Why is the clone tool suddenly not working?

​I've recently upgraded from Elements 4 to Elements 12 (boo-hoo!!) I have been using the clone tool without a problem but now, suddenly, it is not working at all. Help, please!

    Reset the tool. On older versions of PSE, look on the tool's option bar, top left, for a little arrow and click on it to reset. On newer versions of the program, look for a box with lines in it, bottom right, and click to reset. I am not sure which one of these options is appropriate for your v.12.

    If resetting the tool does not fix it, reset preferences to default. To do that, go to Edit menu>Preferences>General and look for this:
