Question

Why no image preview for raw images on external hard drive?

Ok, this is one of those "there must be an obvious answer I am overlooking" issues. I returned from an overseas trip with many gigabytes of RAW images, which I backed up directly from the flash memory cards onto an external portable hard drive. I would like to select images from this hard drive to import to Adobe Bridge/Photoshop CC and on a different computer, Photoshop Elements 2018. When I navigate from the Adobe programs to the hard drive to import files, these appear as generic icons with little mountains on them and the file number. In the "get photos and videos" dialog box there is an option for "generate previews" which is grayed out.

I would like to be able to see thumbnails of the images on the hard drive so I can decide whether or not to import them to the program I will use to do the postprocessing. Do I need to import them all into the Adobe program and then send them all back to the hard drive? Advice welcomed.

What operating system are you using?

What make and model camera are you using?

I am using Windows 10. The cameras are Nikon D500 and D850. Yes, I have the camera RAW update for the D850. When I open the files within Photoshop Elements (or Adobe Bridge) the images appear just fine. And if I open the files within the programs and then send it back to the hard drive for storage I can see the preview. So there is something here about the program on the computer not recognizing the RAW files on an external drive the same way it recognizes files on the computer itself.

The Organizer's Get Photos and Videos from Files and Folders appears to use the Windows 10 file explorer which doesn't have an updated codec that covers the Nikon D500 or D850, so that's why your not seeing a preview.

On the other hand the Organizers Get Photos and Videos in Bulk dialog appears to use Camera Raw to generate the previews, but unfortunately one can't pick individual files to import, just the whole folder.

As far as Bridge goes, you should be able to see the previews of your files if your just navigating to the drive using the Folders panel, since bridge uses camera raw to generate the previews.
