Question

Why the empty folder?

Having recently installed Elements 2025 I'm finding that once it's been opened/used [ I'm using the Editor] there's a file folder (in my Downloads folder) called "mas", but it's always empty.

I usually delete it & there appears to be no effects.

Why is this being created?

It's one those things you don't ever need to worry about.   It's simliar to your thumbnails:    They get automatcially created as needed.  You can search your entire computer for "thumbs.db" and delete all of them if you want.  Last time I did I had about 125 different thumbs.db file, I deleted all them with zero worry.  MAC computers have DS_STORE  as it's equivalent.  If you ever install a program and you see a DS_STORE file that usually means that software was created on a MAC,

In Photoshop Elements, the "MAS" folder typically refers to a hidden folder within the program's application directory, containing files related to the "Media Asset Server" functionality which allows for managing and accessing large media libraries, particularly when working with large image catalogs within the Organizer feature.

Key points about the MAS folder:
  • Hidden location:
You usually won't see this folder directly in your file explorer as it's designed to be hidden within the application directory.

  • Media management:
Its primary function is to facilitate the smooth management of large image collections within the Organizer, allowing for efficient access and organization of photos.

  • Technical details:
The exact contents of the MAS folder might include temporary files, cache data, and configuration settings related to the Media Asset Server functionality.

Thanks for the explanation, though I'm not worried, it's merely curiosity, never having seen it previously in Elements 2019.

Just a couple of points though, "mas" is always visibly and empty.

But as long as the application functions correctly, & deleting the empty folder does no harm, I'll sleep soundly 😉
