In het programma Photoshop Elements 2018 krijg ik nadat ik foto's heb geïmporteerd@ grijze vlakken met een zandloper erin te zien.

Hoe kan ik dit veranderen dat ik de foto's te zien krijg?

After you have imported your files, they are all read and stored in your catalog. The process can take some time, especially with large or raw photos and videos. This is done in background task and lets you work on the already displayed pictures.

To be sure the creation process of the thumbnail is ok, select one or a few files, right click and choose the option to update thumbnail.
