HEVC videos look scrambled in preview images and video preview

Hi all,

I own Premiere Elements 2020 v18 (20200130.daily.2070236) running on Win10 on Ryzen7 2700x and Radeon RX580. Trying to edit HEVC video material from my GoPro 7 I get scrambled preview images after importing media. Previewing these imported videos in small window is ok (only if switching to highest output quality). Previewing in cutting window results in scrambled video as well. (See screenshot attached). Do you have any idea how to solve this issue? I have tried so far to reinstall windows HEVC codec, installing latest video drivers and deleting media cache in Premiere.

I have exactly the same problem on AP2020 with HEVC files from my GoPro recorded in 1440p resolution. What is interesting , 4K 60 HEVC clips look OK and I can work on them apart from another problem which I described here:

There are some issues with HEVC and AP even 2020 and I feel disappointed since I upgraded PE mainly to get HEVC support.

I’m surprised that Adobe hasn’t fixed it as many more users must have encountered that problem

Surfer, I agree that it "should" handle higher frame rate HEVC footage. The reality is that high frame rate HEVC is closer to "cutting edge" than old and reliable. Premiere Elements updates once a year and coding seems aimed at mainstream consumer cameras. I started using Premiere Elements when HD was close to "cutting edge" and the workflow wasn't as smooth as it "should" have been.

If anyone knows the solution it will be the Online Support group. PLEASE return for an update here if you learn a solution!

I have borrowed GoPro HEVC footage to try on my computer. I could not get HEVC at 60fps to work. 30fps worked fine. It MAY be that Premiere Elements can't handle HEVC at 60. If your footage is HEVC at 60 fps you may need to convert it with something like the (free) Handbrake program. Another option is to start a chat session with Adobe using the Online Support choice in the Help Menu.

Hi whsprague,

thank you for your answer. My videos are 50p. For I would expect Premiere Elements to be able to handle 50p I would prefer not to convert videos before editing if there is another solution. If not, it may be worth a try...

Onlinesupport is a good idea, I'll have a try.

Not HEVC 50p. And not at the 2704x1520 resolution.

You're not going to be able to edit that video resolution and frame rate natively in this program.

Can't really tell much from your screen capture, but I'd first confirm that you are actually matching your project settings and video specs.

Open your original video in your the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text report and paste it to this forum.

Also, go to the program's Edit menu and tell us what is listed on the General page under Project Settings.

Hi Steve,

thank you for your answer.

General project setting are

3840*2160 50p, square pixel 50fps timecode

It made no difference to change to from 1080p50, problem remains the same.

If I stop the video in the preview, the picture is clear. After resume playing,

it gets scrambled after a glimpse.
