Question

Premiere elements 18 and iphone 13

Please can anyone let me know if there is a workaround to be able to edit videos filmed on iphone 12/13 on Premiere Elements 18.

Do I need to updgrade to 2022 (and will I actually be able to edit the videos)? If I do need to upgrade, do I have to pay the full price again.

Thank you

Bottom line - I had been importing Iphone 12 video just fine into Premiere Elements 2020 for the last 3 yrs and older versions for over 15 yrs.

THEN - the program just stopped working. Tried installing 2023 - that doesn't allow Iphone 12 import either.

"someone" changed something. Now my old Projects are not loading correctly either.

Seriously consdering an attorney at this point.

In the last month - over a decade of work has been rendered Useless. I am always improving previous work - not any more.

Have a Tech looking into this on Monday 8/21/23.

Bottom line - I know Elements CAN work in Iphone 12 HDR - I was just doing that 2 months ago and for the last 15 yrs.

There are a couple things you can do.

As John wrote, you can convert the video from HEVC (aka "H.265") to AVC (aka "H.264).  The files will be a little larger, your computer won't work as hard and the video quality will be as good.

Second, you can install an HEVC codec that you buy from Microsoft for 99 cents.  Instructions are here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-elements/using/hevc-decoding-on-windows.html#HEVCvideoextension

Third, for future videos on your phone, go the the settings and pick "Most Compatable" and it will record in a more common format that us usable in more video editing programs like Premiere Elements.

Upgrading to 2022 will not change the need for the additional HEVC codec.   If you did upgrade you would have to buy the program again.  There is a small reduction in price for "upgrades".

For now, see if you can convert to a different codec with https://handbrake.fr/ open source transcoder/converter

Assuming you're using Windows, have you installed the HEVC codec?

If you do that, you should be able to edit this file with version 2020.

It depends on the specs of the video.

Open one of your iPhone videos in the free download MediaInfo. In MediaInfo, set View to Text and then copy the text of that report and paste it to this forum.

If these are HEVC video files (and the report will tell us) then you should be able to edit them in Premiere Elements 2020 (aka version 18). Although on a Windows computer, you may need to install an additional component.

Many users are having issues with VFR.  Use Handbrake to convert to constant frame rate:

Here is a tutorial:
