13.1.4 Crashing

Working on an iMac and MBP both with the latest MacOS and running Premiere 13.1.4 and am getting repeated stalls on playback of at least 5-10 seconds and/or then the program freezes. I also get stalls or freezes with most simple actions, like using the blade tool or track select or undo or moving tracks.

Projects I'm having these issues with are both using 4K Sony Linear PCM, H.264 video files and being run off Lacie external drives or a G Tech 5400rpm drive. Cutting in a 2k sequence using Metal and have tried both Quicktime and MPEG for previews.

I've tried all the normal things — cache, preferences, reinstal, used the cleaner— and still getting these issues. Is this a drive issue? If so, why is this a new phenomenon? In previous versions I've run the same set up without issue. Why is it emmerging now?I just had to force quit a few times and then the program wouldn't quit. Hard to do a hard restart.

Just a few years ago, I had a RED RAW multicam sequence on a lesser system without issue. I'm confused and sick of losing so much time! Don't really want to go to a proxy workflow but is that what's needed? Would love any guidance.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

By any chance, are you working in a older project that was updated to 13.1.4? Have you tried a fresh project with the same media?

    Tomorrow_Andrew,

Which models of these Mac computers? What is their CPU and GPU configuration? With older Macs, CC2019 system requirements are now exceeding the installed components that are installed in many of those machines.

My MBP is 2017 16gb 3.1GHZ with Raedon 560 and I have the Sonnet eGPU with a 570. The iMac is a 2017 5k with 40gb RAM, the Radeon Pro 575 4 GB and 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5. Thanks!

Those computer specs are decent; the iMac is a little underpowered with that i5 but the MBP should be performing better. I do think your media drive choices are part of the issue (I'm shocked that 5400rpm drive worked for you in the past), especially with that Sony 4K footage which is pretty hefty.

It may be a mix of everything:  4K H264 source, your processor speeds on the iMac/MacBook Pro (and to some degree, RAM), and the types of external storage.

Have you tried transcoding to Apple ProRes422 (LT)?  I wouldn't expect my MacPro (2013 model) to play 4K H264 smoothly, but I know it plays 4K Apple ProRes422 (any flavor) just fine.

Maybe reconsider the Proxy Workflow.  I do a lot of editing on my 2013 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina and 2015 11-inch MacBook Air off USB3 and Thunderbolt mobile drives with 4K full resolution with attached 1280x720 Apple ProRes Proxy proxies and then finish on my Mac Pro.  It's a great workflow that's keeping me from having to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro.  (Not that I wouldn't be happy to, but I'm also happy to keep my older laptops running as long as possible.)

Thanks Warren. Been trying to avoid that workflow but sounds like I need to move that direction.

A few years ago you did not have Premiere 2019, its a lot more demanding.

And 5400 rpm is known to be slow compaired to ssd.

That's why I called it out. But I suppose that's been the one constant over the years between projects. So curious why it's bottlenecking more now?
