Question

4k export too slow

Hi guys, when exporting Videos (especially 4k Videos) the export time is always super long. For example right now I am exporting an 4k vertical Video which is only 1:30min long at 50fps and only 20 Bitrate, so my file is not too big (248MB). I'm editing with a Mac Book M2 Max (32GB Ram, 1 TB SSD)

But still it takes about 3,5h(!!!) for exporting. This can't be normal right??

I will be greateful for any tips, thanks in advance 🙂

Hi Matt, thanks for your reply!

Yes, Hardware Encoding is activated.

I watched several YT Videos before posting my question here and that was also one of the things they said.

See my screenshot (sorry, its in German)

It's possible something in your export settings is causing the export to fall back to "Software Encoding" which means only the CPU is used to encode the video frames. For better exporting times you will want to take advantage of "Hardware Encoding" which is where the dedicated video encoding part of the M2 chip is used and can be much faster.

When you are setting up your export, look in the bottom right of the screen at the Output summary (see my picture) and you should see "Hardware Encoding" or "Software Encoding". If you see "Software Encoding", that is probably why the export is taking so long. Make sure you are exporting to H.264 or H.265/HEVC and try changing some of the encoding settings to get "Hardware Encoding" to be written there. I'm sorry it's difficult to give more direct settings withou seeing your whole screen.
