5.1 Surround and Broadcast file export issues.

Hi

I need to supply a broadcast file with the following audio specs:

Track 1 Stereo Left

Track 2 Stereo Right

Track 3 M+E Left

Track 4 M+E Right

Track 5 Mute

Track 6 Mute

Track 7 Mute

Track 8 Mute

Or

Track 1 Stereo Left

Track 2 Stereo Right

Track 3 5.1 Front Left

Track 4 5.1 Front Right

Track 5 5.1 Centre

Track 6 5.1 LFE

Track 7 5.1 Left Surround

Track 8 5.1 Right Surround

And the output needs to be -24LKFS. True Peak not to exeed -2dB.

Usually in a TVC (30sec) i would export the audio to a single stereo file and send it to Audition where i would make it -24lkfs. After which i would export it together with the vision through Premiere and that would be fine.

But this time they want it 5.1 surround -24lkfs as this is a 30 minute product.

As I was unaware of the delivery requirements my sequence is not set up in 5.1. Currently I have about 18 tracks of audio. Music, VO, on set, foley, SFX etc etc.

How do I take this sequence and create a 5.1 output with it?

They want it in XDCAM in a MXF OP1a container, which I can do but if the audio isn’t right then, nothing is right.

Any assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks

Do you have a 5.1 monitoring setup in your edit suite? If you don't then making the surround mix will be impossible.

That's a strange delivery request.

It looks like the way things used to be done when delivered to DTRS, not file based - and your biggest pproblem there is going to be exoprting a stereo & a surround mix at the same time. Having the stereo & 5.1 in the same file is something I would absolutely question and get confirmation on - it is possible to do this, but your DAW workstation will need to have not only a stereo setup but in addition a 5.1 setup, properly calibrated, and a total of 8 channels of audio output and a system capable of being able to hear it clearly.

What I am not clear on is just what they are asking for - it seems from your initial post that it needs to be either stereo main & stereo M&E, or stereo plus surround so if this is correct then option 2 is your only one - the M&E is irrelevant at this point.

The 5.1 will need to be mixed properly too - remember that foor TV work, the centre channel belongs to the dialogue so dubbing in a different language is possible. All walla, foley & SFX can be 4-channel (or 4.1) but all dialogue must be mixed centre.

If you are not experienced at this, then I would pass on it - the learning curve for surround is a steep one and it sounds like you are just not set up for it yet. I recommend doing so - it is the future.

Also....

If they want Music and Effects on tracks 3 and 4.

Does that mean they dont want them in the stereo track mixes?

Thanks
