5 second delay after pressing play button Oct 2019

I see a lot of posts about this in 2018 and 2017 but why hasn't this been fixed yet? I am using proxy files and have playback set to 1/4. My computer was built this year with an i9-7920x 2.4ghz processor, 32 gigs ram and a SSD and a Geforce RTX 2070 for a GPU. And dispite all of that, after making 36 cuts in a 30 minute video and adjusting the color settings, I get this terrible lag when I push the play button.

To be clear, there was no lag before I did the editing and there is no lag when playing the video, and there is no lag when stopping the play button, there is only lag between the time I press the space bar (or even the playbutton itself) to start it playing and when it actually starts playing. That lag is 3-5 seconds. Does anyone know of a simple fix for this?

@Fred, you should try the proxies, they really do work well. Any h.264 footage should probably consider a proxy. I've been using the Cineform 720p for my projects and I wouldn't think of editing anything significant without. Also, it's pretty much a given that we need our footage on SSDs. I'm using 2 m.2 drives on for Adobe and one for all project files.

Having the same problem. A pause of 5 to 30 seconds after hitting play before it will actually start catching or playing.

For me, it seems to be connected to using h.264 clips in 4K. In both CC 2019 and CC2020.

You could say that's just asking a lot, but my CPU is pretty good, and lots of other programs can handle that without a slowdown.

Me too. The issue went away when I used proxies but I still had other issues when adding effects. Seriously, I have had an easier time with Filmora 9.2.

Hmmm yeah, that's definitely a bit odd! Can you tell us 1. what sort of media format(s) youre working with (original and proxies)? And what kinda drive setup you have (HDD vs SSD, where your media lives, etc)?

Hi Jason, I am using MP4 video for the original and proxies. Original is 4K 60fps 40k bitrate and proxy is 720p 10k bitrate. Premier pro is installed on my SSD but now that you mentioned it, the video files I am working with are on my HDD. I keep my videos there as it is much larger.

Another thing to consider is that MP4/H.264 videos are not great for proxies. Better proxy codecs are ProRes Proxy or DNXHD/HR LB. The SSD/HDD thing can also make a difference, so Id explore that as well!
