60 fps imports as 30 fps

Hi,

I have 60 fps footage. When I import it (either through import button or drag and drop) it shows up in my bin as being 29.97.

If I interpret footage, it just plays it fast forward.

My comp is set to 29.97, and I want to be able to play my 60 fps footage at half speed.  Regardless of what my comp is, my footage should still import into the bins at the correct frame rate, no?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you confident that your footage is 60p footage and not 60i? If it is shot at 60i then the correct frame rate is 29.97.

If you set your Project Panel to the list view and look at the Field Order column, unless it says No Fields (Progressive) it is likely your footage was shot at 60i.

Huh okay. Can't believe I did not know that.

My camera has the option for 24p, 30p, and 60i (but it crops the sensor more).
I guess if it cant be slowed down, why would anyone ever choose the 60i option? Whats the point of shooting 60i if it can only be cut at 29.97? Probably a discussion on a different forum.

Thanks.

You can make the footage slow motion by placing the clip on the timeline, then right clicking on it and choosing Speed/Duration.

Change the speed there, if you are using a recent version of Premiere, choose Optical Flow for superior Time Interpolation:

60i - interlaced footage- is used primarily  by broadcast television.
