Question

Adding different skies to your footage

Hello all.

I have some drone footage that I want to do some editing with.

I want to change the sky that I currently have, and get a new one.

All of the tutorials I have seen show the camera being stationary, however, I use a drone for most of my work, which means that the picture is always moving.

So, is there a way to put in a different sky in Premiere Pro, with moving footage on a subject like a building or a church for example?

Thanks,

Hello,

There are more than 20 methods to do it, but the one I use most often is as follows:

For this effect to work, ensure that the objects in your video aren't the same color as your sky.

Apply Ultra Key Effect

  1. Go to the Effects panel and type in Ultra Key.
  2. Add the Ultra Key effect to your video clip.

Key Out the Sky

  1. In the Effect Controls panel, scroll down to Ultra Key.
  2. Click the Eyedropper Tool icon.
  3. Move to your preview screen and click on the sky. You'll see the sky turn gray and black, indicating it's now transparent.
  4. To see this transparency, click the Wrench Icon in the preview screen, then select Transparency Grid.

Fine-Tune the Keying

  1. If not all of your sky is transparent, expand the Matte Generation settings under Ultra Key.
  2. Adjust the Transparency slider until the entire sky becomes transparent.

Add the New Sky

  1. Drag your original video up to Video Layer 2.
  2. Import and place your new sky footage/image onto Video Layer 1.

Fix Grain Issues

  1. If you notice any grain in your sky replacement, increase the Pedestal setting under Ultra Key in the Effect Controls panel.

By following these steps, you can effectively replace the sky in your moving footage using Adobe Premiere Pro.
