adding graphics such as backgrounds to fonts

I haven't been on Premiere Pro for a  while and came back. First new project tonight.

When I click on Graphics, I get some toos including the type tool. In older versions there was alsoa couple of options for solid sqaure, rectangle or rounded corner blocks. They aren't there in this version. I want to reuse some video but it has text with such backing, so I would like to cover it with a solid background and then type over it. I need the graphics though in addition to the type tool.

As Meg notes, you can add rectangles and ellipses in the "New" item button of the EGP. You can also add graphics and shapes from files. So if you create a shape in Illustrator or Photoshop, you can add that in by using the "from file" option. You can build shapes in the EGP by combining rectangles/ellipses and grouping them.

You can either use the Legacy Title Tool that you are familiar with:

File > New > Legacy Title . . .

or you can add shapes to text graphics by adding a shape layer using Essential Graphics:
