Adobe Premiere 2018 version 12.0.0 operation irregularity

We recently installed new SSD system drives and Premiere 2018 version 12.0.0 expecting performance improvements while connected to our server.

We are finding that when operating with Mac OS Yosemite and the new install there are performance issues that are slowing things down.

-For one thing, it is not allowing the Nvidia GTX 680 and recent drivers to work properly.  We tried going back to earlier drivers assigned to the operating system without any effect on improvements.

-The timeline at half-resolution playback of 1080p HD material is stalling for about 30 seconds before it will play the timeline no matter where in the timeline the playhead resides. It does not matter that the material in the timeline is sourced from C100's, Sony, or ProRes native files.  It performs poorly in single track or multitrack areas that are not rendered.  The Cache has been assigned to a separate drive that is HDD.

-The CUDA Drive is not working for us any longer and renders and audio waveforms are disappearing from the timeline at times.

None of these issues existed in the prior version of Pr CC 2017 on Mavericks.

Anyone have a solution to improve performance?

    Hi Zip,

We recently installed new SSD system drives and Premiere 2018 version 12.0.0 expecting performance improvements while connected to our server.

Which server? How is this "server" connected to your Premiere Pro workstation? Fiber Channel? Gigabit Ethernet? I need a lot more info. Improvements to drive speed can affect better playback performance, and faster file management, but I'm not sure what you were expecting.

Keep in mind that Premiere Pro is not designed to function in an environment where media is served from a separate server to multiple clients. Exceptions can be made if the data can meet the specs of throughput for your format and number of streams you need to support (not including network overhead and redundancy). Often, a specialist like a VAR is needed for troubleshooting enterprise level post production storage and media delivery operations, so also keep that in mind. Our support for a system like this is very limited.

We are finding that when operating with Mac OS Yosemite and the new install there are performance issues that are slowing things down.

    • Check System Requirements: Adobe Premiere Pro System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.10 is no longer supported with Premiere Pro CC 2018. You need to update.
    • Furthermore, if you have Premiere Pro CC 2017 projects, remain in that version until these projects are complete. This is a major new version of Premiere Pro, therefore, only new projects should be started in the newer software.
    • If you simply must advance an older project into the newer software, do not convert the project file, simply import any legacy project form CC 2017 into a brand new CC 2018 project.
    • I would still try and avoid this by remaining in CC 2017 for legacy projects. You really don't want to keep dealing with the unexpected behavior an updated project can bring.

-For one thing, it is not allowing the Nvidia GTX 680 and recent drivers to work properly.  We tried going back to earlier drivers assigned to the operating system without any effect on improvements.

It seems that Apple and/or NVIDIA is having trouble maintaining driver compatibility along with new versions of macOS. As you've noticed, downgrading may stabilize or even improve your situation. Personally, I use OpenCL processing or Software Only mode most of the time to avoid CUDA issues.

I've observed that Apple's OS development is largely focused on AMD and not NVIDIA, so (and I'm no engineer so I cannot verify this) that may be the reason behind certain older NVIDIA GPUs not functioning as well as expected. I'm experiencing issues on my own MacBook Pro with a similar NVIDIA GPU as you have. I will continue keeping an eye on this issue.

What happens if the footage is played from a local drive and not the network storage?

It performs poorly in single track or multitrack areas that are not rendered.

Any effects added to these clips? How many streams of multicamera are you attempting? You do need data throughput for video effects and multiple streams. If it worked well previously, it could very well be related to the new drives. You need to test the actual speed of the drives and the data throughput you require.

Anyone have a solution to improve performance?

Other than what I've suggested. Make sure Adobe folder permissions have been repaired. Info: Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, and later)

Report back with more info and I'll try to help.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Kevin,

Thank you for being so thorough in your response. I would like to answer some of the questions you posed in return.

Generally my expectation was to see an improvement in speed, response time for commands and overall operation by going to an SSD System Drive and updating to CC 2018. It turns out that I was mistaken earlier as we are running El Capitan Mac OS X 10.11..6 with CC2018 Apps and not Yosemite.

We have functionality by turning off CUDA for Pr CC 2018 so that has been eliminated. Apple ideology does get in the way of things often as they "think" they know best what the user behavior and choices should be. I disagree. I wonder about the new iMac Pro on the AMD graphics set for use with cloud products? Nvidia was the users choice before and we bought cards for all our work stations on Adobe's recommendation at that time.

The performance issues mentioned were nota problem on Pr CC 2017 although different versions had memory usage problems that were quickly discovered and snuffed out by using a different release version. Disappointing but solved.

We use the ethernet connection with either dedicated 1GB ethernet cards or Mac's 1 GB ethernet for connectivity to the Small-Tree Titanium Z server with no difficulty in the past. So I don't expect that to contribute to the problems discussed.

Importing an older project into 2018 is something we will try on the next round and see if it improves timeline playback. Thanks of that suggestion.

Thanks for the link to the permissions as we will try that right away and see if it helps.

Thanks for your input and I will get back to you shortly.
