An Unknown Error... why?

I went to open a big project file in Premiere a few days ago and got “An Unknown Error Occurred While Opening The Project” message. So I googled it and the first answer that came up was go to the auto save files. That worked. I lost a few minutes of work time but no big deal. But it keeps getting worse and now a lot of auto saves won't open either.

I've been using Premiere for about 15 years and have never encountered this before. I've done some reading on this and I've seen several different workarounds to get your project to open, but my main concern is WHY this is happening? What can I do to avoid this?

Something that seems to have worked is I was able to get one of the auto-saves to open and then I exported the project as a “Final Cut Pro XML” (file > export > final cut pro xml) and then imported that into a new project. When you do that it brings just the basic timeline in with the files and it seems to be stable... Just fyi

As I go along with this large project I will be exporting XMLs and hopefully that will keep me safe *fingers crossed*

That hasn't worked for me... thank you for the suggestion though
