Question

Any way to sort Project panel so that bins are always at the top (ala Explorer)?

Hi. Long-time reader, first-time poster :). Question:

is there any way to sort the assets in Premiere's Project panel so that all the bins are listed at the top of the list, in alphabetical order, with all other assets like movie and audio clips, etc, listed under the bins?

I'm talking about the way Windows Explorer does it. Let's assume you got a folder with some folders and some files inside. Even when you sort the folder contents alphabetically by name, Explorer still shows the folders at the top, sorted, before the list of individual files under them, also sorted.

Is there way to do the same in Project panel?

At first I switched on "Media Type" in Metadata Display and sorted the list view by that, - and all the bins, of the "Bin" type, were shown at the top of everything else. I felt very clever and very proud of myself - until I've imported my first audio file which (surprise) has the media type "Audio"...

Am I missing something obvious? Suggestions?

Yup, manually changing the folder name to bring it up to the top (for example, add "-" or "=" or "_" or whatever non-alpha symbol goes before letters and numbers) is my go-to method when I need to make the a specific folder/group of folders to stick to the top of the list before the alphabetical order starts. Man, this brings back memories of Library in Flash... PhillipJoseph - your way is actually very similar to what I have set up in my project templates 🙂

But that's not what I was asking about - I was wondering if there was a way already present in Premiere to simply make all bins show up first in the list, regardless of their names and before anything else. That way I wouldn't have to manually screw around with bin names. But I guess not. Thank you guys, I appreciate the suggestions.

Have you tried sorting in Label Color?

editing programs are not like windows ( API for Windows Explorer ). You sorta have to experiment a bit to see what works best for your number of bins and so on... sorry...

Nobody can tell you what will eventually work best for you.

Especially in PPro. In Resolve there's way more organizing and smart bin options, but even that takes time to set up ( you have to basically give keywords to clips and they will go into bins that match that criteria )

But it's not like file explorer stuff... totally different.

Give your bins a number prefix on their names.

001 Camera X

002 Camera Y

003 Remote Audio

Just adding onto Niel's suggestion. The basic version of my project templates typically have Bins like:

1_Sequences

2_Video

3_Audio

4_Gfx

You can have variations and expand on that. Inside of those bins if I want something near the top without a number I'll usually just use an underscore, like in Sequences I'll usually have a '_Backups' bin or something. Just some examples. It's always good to have a logical folder scheme both inside and outside of Premiere.
