Aspect ratio

Hello,

I seem to be having some trouble with aspect ratios using premier pro cc 2017. I was editing some footage from my DJI Mavic pro, shooting in 4k, 24fps. I realised later on when exporting the footage my aspect ratio had become 4:3 (3264x2448) instead of the original (4096x2160), and the frame rate changed to 29.97. Could it be because I added audio into the timeline before adding the drone footage?

Any tips on how I can ensure that the aspect ratio and frame rates stay consistent to what I am shooting and editing, for example when shooting and editing 4k, 24fps, 16:9 aspect ratio I want to end up with a video with the same parameters.

Depending on some application settings, yes, it is possible that you had the wrong sequence settings by creating a sequence and putting music in first. It depends on how you created your sequence. In MOST cases, the safest/best way to create a sequence is to take one of your clips in the Project Panel and right click on it and choose "New Sequence From Clip." This creates a sequence that matches the frame rate and resolution of the clip. Then you can edit away and not think about it until export At the export window, you need to double check your settings to make sure they match. For example, if you're exporting to H.264 (pretty common), and you select one of the presets (Match Source - Adaptive High Bitrate is what I recommend for most cases) this will automatically match your frame rate and resolution (thats what Match Source means). If you pick some other settings/presets, you might have to manually fix the frame rate and resolution in the Video tab in the lower half of the Export window!

Nothing will change automatically, you have to make sure that you export in the frame size, frame rate, correct pixel aspec ratio, etc, etc that you want to export to. If you want to export to 4096x2160, select 4096x2160 in the Export Settings dialog. And, make sure to edit your 4096x2160 footage in a timeline that matches the footage.

4096x2160 footage > edit on a 4096x2160 timeline > export to 4096x2160.
