Question

Autosave cause problems in Production

So basically I have a film I'm editing (a big production).  I have each part of the film in a 20 min sequence. It crashed at one point I opened that section up via auto save. I dragged that project into the Production. It repopulated all the footage in that one project. After using it for a bit i noticed it’s very slow and occasionally i will get a warning of low memory which will sometimes crash.

I thought if i repopulated the production with footage from the previous project it will match frame back to the old location but it doesn’t. Before i re cut that whole section in a new sequence is there anything else i can do.

Additionally I had a huge problem with my project on dropbox the project started to disappear. I moved it off dropbox. But now that section is always asking for a mask? I don’t have it and i’m pretty sure the problem was there before this happened.

Info-

I’m on a Mac Studio M4 Max, 36 GB, 2025.

I’m using Adobe Premiere 26.01 (Official version)

I’m using proxies exported from Resolve. Also i don’t have this issue with anyother sequence in my production.

Any help is much appreciated thank you!

Hey there, @bena9781905417266936,

Thanks for the detailed breakdown — that really helps.

You’ve got a few different things happening here, and they may be related.

Productions + Autosave

Dragging an autosave project directly into a Production and manually relinking can sometimes introduce issues, including:

  • duplicate media references

  • mismatched linking

  • performance slowdowns

Instead, try:

  • Right-clicking in the Production panel → Add Project to Production
This keeps things more consistent with how Productions is designed to manage projects.

Match Frame / Relinking Issues

If Match Frame or source linking is no longer behaving correctly, you can try:

  • Edit → Reassociate Source Clips

This can help restore proper media relationships if they were disrupted during import.

Performance / Memory Warnings

The slowdown and low memory warnings may be tied to how the project was reintroduced into the Production.

You may also want to:

  • Clear Media Cache (Press Shift at launch and delete all media cache from the Reset Options dialog box)

  • Restart Premiere after clearing

Dropbox

Your instinct here is correct.

Using Productions with Dropbox (or other sync-based storage) can lead to:

  • missing or inconsistent media

  • project instability

Best practice:

  • Keep active projects on local storage

  • Use Dropbox only for backup (Auto Save is a good use case)

Mask Issue

The masking issue could be related to:

  • a missing or broken effect reference

  • or changes in the masking system in newer versions

If possible, check the clip in Effect Controls and see what specifically is being requested.

Here’s Adobe’s official guidance on Productions workflows:

If you can share a bit more detail on the mask warning you’re seeing, we can dig into that further.

Hope this helps — definitely a frustrating situation, but there are a few good paths to try here 👍

Thanks,
Kevin

Ohh loving the add to production i didn’t know you could do that with an autosave thank you! Will do that if it happens again- There was no manual relinking but it did duplicate the files and they now link to the wrong project Instead of it’s individual scene projects) Edit → Reassociate Source Clips Seems wrong. Where they are on the drive is correct it’s where they are in the production that is now wrong and causing problems. I guess i just have to rebuild it. On saying that delete cache seems to be making it smoother.

Thanks for your help!
