Banding is STILL an issue with XAVC-I (Sony FS7 10 bit footage)

Just like it says. Premiere is NOT handing the codec properly.  I have the "max bitrate" box ticked.  But this isn't an 8bit vs 10 bit problem.  8 bit footage bands just as 8 but footage should. 10 bit footage is better as expected but STILL has banding.  Almost like instead of 1024 steps of black to white, Premiere treats it like there is 500 or so steps...sort of sitting in the middle between 8bit and 10bit.  Here's screengrabs of the issue...and to see how it SHOULD look, there's a Resolve 14 screenshot in there too.  The Resolve grade is smooth and beautiful.  Any of the effects in Premiere make the same contrasted grade have banding.  Here's the link: Premiere Banding Problem - Google Drive I'll also point out the Lumetri looks by far the worst.  A noisy mess.

There are threads and posts in other places about this issue going back A YEAR and this problem still isn't fixed.  Oh and by the way, if I transcode the footage in AME into DNxHQ and attempt to grade, the banding is STILL THERE.  If I output to Prores while recording from the camera, the problems is NOT there.  It's clearly an issue with the codec.

I would love to get Adobe's take on this.  I'll be calling their help line support Monday and I'll report back the findings.  But if it's a KNOWN PROBLEM for over a year....what gives?

Adobe Premiere Pro on Twitter: "@donmcvey @Adobe Hi Don, though I've seen the issue, we need more info. Can you please f…

When is Adobe going to fix this?  Dang I might need to find another NLE after 10 years of using Premiere.  SMH

using the timeline and export setting "maximum bit depth" changes it for me on my old machine.

    banding gone

Okay I found something promising.  If you re-encode the original XAVC-I mxp file to MXF OP1a format and XAVC, then import and grade that footage in Premiere, the banding IS GONE.  Who knows what is happening here but as least there's a workaround.  Guess I'll be transcoding all footage this way until Adobe fixes it.  Hope this helps anyone suffering from the same problems.

Fascinating ... I hope you've also passed this along on another bug report to the PrPro team ... all information they can get is better, we hope ... and somehow, I'm not surprised. Switching to mxf op1a format seems to cure a variety of ills.

Is there a way to reply to the bug report I made?  Or should I just submit another?  Definitely need to get this info out.

I'll be switching myself.  Resolve definitely has the leg up on color, and version 14 will steal a good chunk of PP's editing advantage, perhaps making it the better overall tool.

Yeah I don't like the direction they are moving.  The Lumetri color was a good idea but it's too limited and very flawed to be taken seriously. Not a good replacement over Speedgrade and DEFINATELY not in the same league as Resolve.  This Essential graphics/sound BS and making very professional and great effects obsolete tells me they are moving in a direction that will lose many loyal users.

It worries me that they are going the route of FCP when Apple dummed down their software from 7 to X. There is a huge surge in video as the barriers to entry are increasingly lowering and the rise of video as a tool for marketing on social platforms has become a widely-accepted practice. I agree that the Essential Graphics/Sound Panels and Lumetri Panel seem like dumbed down versions of what Resolve offers (for colour) and what is traditionally offered for audio. It's as if someone at the top is saying the market is growing with a lot of amateurs, so let's cater to them and let Avid keep the high-end pro broadcast market.

It's great to see Hollywood-level movies being cut in Premiere, and Adobe marketing the heck out of those editors and movies, I just hope they can continue to create features for pros and work on increasing stability and not just creating features for those new to video editing because it will bring them in more new subscriptions.

I'm sure I share the same feelings about Premiere as a lot of you on here... it's a love/hate relationship. Great when things work as they should, but not so great when we discover bugs and lose time and can't really justify it to clients. Overall I'm happy with Premiere and am rooting for Adobe, but I do have concerns about the future and am becoming more and more curious to see if Resolve would work with my company's workflow.

Please fill out the bug/feature report form. They don't ever send a response, but all of the submitted reports are distributed in tabulated form of some kind to the managers who make the all-important decisions as to how to allocate engineering time. The more any one issue gets filed, the higher it is in the report.

Yeah I did but I would like to start a discussion as well.  Thanks

Understood. As many others, I'd love it if there was a bit more "official" discussion of what's going on at times within the program, why some things happen, what's the design intent behind some things that can be puzzling. Doesn't happen, but we users can sit & speculate and suggest possible alterations of work-flows to just get the work out.
