Best practice for merging clips with Long Audio Rolls (Documentary)

Hi, I am editing a documentary with picture and sound recorded separately. Often times audio was kept rolling while camera re-set so nothing was missed - when I merge clips the audio roll is often so much longer than the video it is hard to find the video!

Is there a better way to do this - is it possible to merge clips that trim the audio to the video?

Synch to the time codes (automatically) then trim out the "blank" manually is only way I can think of.

Finding the video gaps is a PPRo Function so that will help.
