Question

Best way to remove unwanted parts of source videos?

Buona sera!

I use a Garmin Virb Ultra 30 to record during my bike rides. At the moment I have many hours (and GB!) of source videos' of which I'll only need a few minutes in future projects. I'm running out of disk space, so I would like to keep only the "good parts" and then remove the old source video from my HD. I can trim the videos in PP and then export them, but I don't want to lose too much quality (seeing that I'll be using those clips in future projects). Using a lossless codec might be the best option for exporting without further compression, but the exported clips will be huge and that is exactly what I want to avoid.

Is trimming and exporting the best solution to get rid of unwanted source material or is there another way to cut up source videos and keep the parts you want? If trimming - exporting is the only way to go, what codec would be the best option? I shoot in 1080 and 4K and have quite some videos with 119.88 fps (slow-mo), but most are 29.97 fps.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Don

There are third-party free apps that let you save trimmed video without recompression. I use Avidemux - it's supported on both Windows and OSX.

Thanks Horsack! I've just downloaded the program and will give it a try.

Good luck! The interface is a little clunky but the utility of being able to extract (copy) portions of source video and save them without recompression and then deleting the original footage is a great solution for drastically reducing the storage demands of video projects.

Cineform is usually the way to go but you wont be able to export to 120fps. 60 is max.

Thanks, Ann! I'll give that a go. If 60 fps is the max, I could still use it for the other footage.

Since I doubt PPro will export your trimmed clips to the same codec, does your Garmin include a program to do lossless cutting?

Thanks for your reply, John. The Garmin Virb software works the same as PP, so you're not touching the original files.
