Question

Black screens and freezes while draging clips

Hi.

I've had this problem for a while now and every fix I've tried haven't helped.

When I work in premiere and drag to make clips longer or shorter the screen freezes, the gpu goes to 100% and then shortly after the screen can go black and after that inside Premiere the program panel, source panel and scrubbing through thumbnails are all black.

After this I have to restart the software for it to work again.

This issue can happen at any time, it can happen 10min in to working with a project or 1h into it.

PC specs.
i9 9920x
RTX 2080 Super 8gb
128gb ram

I have the latest gpu drivers etc.

I mostly edit mp4 footage from a GH5, DJI Mavic 3 Pro.

Thanks for clarifying what the specific issue is with adjusting the clip length.  Can you send a file for us to test with? Long-GOP formats can have these types of issues, especially in UHD and also with a higher-framerate video to sequence.  I understand you don't want to change your workflow, but proxies with long GOP can greatly help.  It's a lot to process.

Also..it isn't really playback issues. It's when I want to extend a clip/layer or shorten it that it freezes for a shirt bit and then the program monitor goes black. I can still play back and use the software as usual..but I can't see any of the video, there is just sound. So I then have to restart the program to get it to work again.

Hi.

Thanks for your answer.

I haven't needed to use proxies before so don't see why I need it now. I have been using the same PC for a few years and the same camera, same settings on the camera for formats, codec etc.

I have a Panasonic GH5 and  film in: MP4 H.264
3840x2160> 50.00p, 150Mbps (4:2:0 8-bit LongGOP)
3840x2160> 25.00p, 150Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit LongGOP)
1920x1080>25.00p, 100Mbps (4:2:2 10-bit LongGOP) VRF at 120fps, so slow motion.

If I interpret the footage it will be half the speed since I record in 50 and the timeline is 25.

My media is on a SSD disk and scratch and cache on another SSD.

My timelines are 25p 3840x2160. I don't have tons of layers, the attached picture is an example.
There is 1 video layer, 1 layer with "stylish" captions (not native), 1 adjustmentlayer with lumetri color on it only. Then some different audio layers. Sot it's a pretty mild kind of timeline.

I have the latest studio drivers and I always do a clean install.

Hi @Mikael38137120zmnm,

I'm sorry to hear you're having playback issues.  I agree with Ann, proxies are a good route to go, especially with the DJI Mavic.  I'd also suggest clearing the cache.  You can also try right-clicking on the footage in the Project panel, selecting "Modify > Interpret Footage," and manually setting the frame rate to match the footage's actual frame rate (e.g., 59.94 for 60fps footage).

Can you tell me where your media lives?  Can you give more specific specs about your media file formats?
Please see: How do I report a Problem?  Sorry for the frustration, and thanks for reaching out.

Try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. Do a clean installation of a Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

This happens even without drone footage. It feels like it has something todo with the graphics card.

Drone footage can be a pita.

Have you considered using proxies.

It's extending or making a clip on the timeline shorter. Can also be moving a clip sometimes if I'm not remembering wrong.

Dragging as in dragging from project window into timeline or from Finder/WE into timeline.
