Can I move my media cache files to an external drive temporarily?

Question

Can I move some of my media cache files to an external hard drive temporarily while not opening any projects that use them, then move them back to the same spot on my computer when I need them again? Will those projects open without having to re-conform after the files have been temporarily stored elsewhere and then put back?
 
The purpose would be to free up space on my computer until I need those files again.

it may be possible to do it. some older threads report it used to work.you'd have to close premiere to reload the preferences. I would test it on a small project first.
