Question

Can someone explain the Timecode effect to me?

Does it ever truly read TC? When I put it on a transparent video clip to burn in my sequence master TC, I set it to "generate" and manually type in the start timecode and set the fps. Is there no way to have it display sequence TC automatically (read it instead of generate it)? Also, what is the difference between "Media" and "Clip"? In addition to sequence timecode, I use this effect often to display clips' TC. Since my clips often are resized/repo-ed, I apply it to a transparent video layer and select the source track in the effect controls. This never displays the correct TC of the clip. I did read about a workaround, which is setting the renderer to "software" only, then it displays the correct TC of each clip. This doesn't make sense to me, but it is does work. Can anyone give me an rundown of the Timecode effect and it's settings, or at least a confirmation that is it a bit jacked.

usually a vitc ( video integer timecode ) will show you what your timeline has ( it counts the frames of your timeline). it has nothing to do with what your shot tc is... it just counts frames.

You can burn that in if you want but I use resolve so I have no clue if you can do that in PPro.

One thing I will say is to try the Timecode Overlay in the Effects section of the Export Settings dialogue. In its default settings it appears to show sequence timecode - despite source being set to 'Media File'.

If you put a clip on your sequence and set it to 200% speed, the 'Clip' timecode will still increase in 1 frame increments but the 'Media' timecode will increment by 2 frames (as expected). Not sure of what the pros or cons of each would be in any particular workflow but it's something to bear in mind. I agree, its not particularly clear and obvious - I'm sure someone else can chime in.
