Can't make a selection

Usually, when I'm using an Adjustment Layer, I can't manipulate it in the Effect Controls panel. I click on the Adjustment Layer, but then the Effect Controls panel 'deselects' my selection, showing "no clip selected"

Similar problem. As soon as I right click on a grab handle to selct a change option, e.g. distort, warp etc., the layer is deslected and I cannot adjust anything.  Driving me absoluteley nuts.
