Question

Cannot attach full resolution media to proxy

I created proxies and gave them to another editor who edited the sequence and gave it back to me. Now I cannot reattach the full resolution media.

When I try to reconnect full resolution media, it fails with the error “Proxy Media and Full Resolution Media must have matching audio channels.” They do. I imported the full resolution clip. I’m looking at media file properties for both clips side-by-side. They are identical except for the frame size, compressor and color space.

Any ideas on what is happening?

I wanted to confirm: are you relinking to the original media using Proxy > Reconnect Full Resolution Media, and not File > Link Media?

This commonly happens with media that has two audio channels. Premiere Pro expects a file with either a stereo file or dual mono, but the clip’s Clip Channel Format is the opposite. Using Reconnect Full Resolution Media overrides this.

Yes I am using Proxy>Reconnect Full Resolution Media. And as the screenshots show, as far as I can tell the audio tracks are identical. Here’s something that may or may not be relevant. When the other editor got the project he only had the proxy media, so he linked to it rather than the full res media. So the project shows that both the media and the proxy media point to the same proxy file. IDK if that’s normal or not. Nothing shows as offline. If I select that clip and “make offline” nothing appears to happen. The icon doesn’t change, media offline does not appear, the media file path does not change, and if I then try to reconnect full resolution media I get the same error message about audio channels.

As an aside, my intention was to make this a shared project via creative cloud, but I need training on that, neither of us had done that before and when we tried, it did not work. Since we didn’t have time to troubleshoot, we just punted. I’m sure if we figured that out it would be the right way to do this.

Thanks for the extra detail. I suspect the clips' audio channel setup in the project no longer matches what Premiere expects.

Could you try this on two or three clips first:

    1. In the Project panel, select a few of the affected clips.
    2. Go to Clip > Modify > Audio Channels.
    3. Set Preset to Use File. If it's already set to Use File, change the Preset to Mono instead, so each channel is its own mono clip.
    4. Click OK, then try Proxy > Reconnect Full Resolution Media again on those clips.

If this continues you might want to do a right click on the Proxy Media in the Project panel and replace the media with the full def footage.

I have tried that and it does work. Just have to do it one clip at a time and then go back and reattach proxies. Kind of cumbersome.
