Question

captions in premier

I’m trying to export a vid in Premier with on/off subtitles.

I can burn the captions directly onto the video and can export with a sidecar file, but I can’t work out how to export the video so they can be turned on/off in viewers such as QuickTime.

The only options in the export/captions dropdown are Burn Captions into Video or Create Sidecar file.

    Hi @mikeb123XXX:

    A couple factors affect being able to embed captions into an exported movie:  There’s the caption track type and the export format.

    For embedded captions, I use CEA-608 as the caption track and QuickTime as the file format.  This works because QuickTime supports embedded 608 captions.  If I were to switch to H264, it would not work because MP4 does not support embedded captions.

    Pictured:  Export settings with the format set to QuickTime and “Embed in Output File” enabled for Captions.

    There. It’s happened. Two replies, both posted, “just now”!

    @mikeb123XXX,

    You’re thinking of embedded subtitles, which requires one of the closed caption formats, e.g. 608/708.

    And then you’re limited to exporting as quicktime of mxf op1a.

    But many modern players allow you to turn on/off sidecar file captions.
