CAPTIONS WORKFLOW OFFLINE EDITING

I’m using Subbits from video tool shed to generate XML with png frames, auto generated from a transcript. (There’s probably a way of exporting your PP titles and translating them to subs)

One potential way of working, without having to drag subs around is to multicam.

Your multicam séquence would be

V1: Footage

V2: Subs

V3: Nested Copy of V1&v2 (which could be a mixdown for performanc)

Then cut with ‘camera’ 3, when done dupe your cut to V2. Select all on V1 and set to camera 1, all on V2 to camera 2 and, optionally, flatten.

I think that’ll work... (be more complicated if you have multiple cameras though)

For clips that i’ve Had to duplicate with captions or move around I’ve set an in and out point around them and made a movie of that section with the caption baked in. Then you can place the clip wherever you like.

I would be very very careful when using PP subtitle/captioning tools. They don't seem to work very well at all and haven't been for a time from what I gathered from other threads here. Disclaimer: I've had some frustrating encounters with bugs in that tool

For large amounts of text I would recommend switching to a different tool altogether. For subtitles I can warmly recommend Aegisub. It has some great timing features and can export into pretty much all important formats - Oh, and its free/donationware although not supernew. I use a different software to render the titles onto screen.

For regular Overlays the PP title tool will do fine, although I still haven't figured out how to copy parts of the formatting over.
