Question

Capturing entire tape through timecode breaks

I'd like to be able to capture a bunch of Hi8 tapes in a "set it and forget it" fashion, but the capture process seems to stop randomly when I'm importing. Sometimes it'll be a break in the scene, but often it'll just stop capturing in the middle of a long uninterrupted scene as well, so i'm forced to babysit the capture process and end up with a TON of clips, some of which are only a couple of frames long which is super annoying.

I'm running an A/V cable (RCA) out from my playback handycam into a digitizer (ADS Pyro A/V Link) that's connected to my Mac via FireWire, so i'm not sure how it's detecting any sort of timecode break. I've been able to do this in Final Cut Pro X, and Quicktime X. I've even been able to FF and RW while capturing which is great, and something I'm not able to do in Premiere. Is there some setting I'm missing?

i'm not sure how it's detecting any sort of timecode break.

It might be just a signal break, a moment on the tape without any video or audio.

Well that's the thing, half of the time when the capture stops, it'll be in the middle of a long uninterrupted shot with no signal break; it seems to stop capturing at random. I've made sure the 'Scene Detect' and 'Device Control' are both off. Also, I'm basically just capturing an image since I'm running the A/V out of the camera into the digitizer, so I'm really not sure how or why it's detecting any type of break.

I don't have access to a PC, so that's out. As I said, I've been able to capture uninterrupted in the past, but I'm not sure if it was an OSX update broke that, or if it was because I was using FCPX. At one point I was just importing with Quicktime X and Quicktime 7 Pro. But now both Quicktimes are doing the same thing as Premiere, and breaking at the same places. So hard to pin down what's going wrong

Several Mac users have had issues, and I've been curious as to whether the legacy QT problems will make this even harder. Let's see if someone has a workable flow for you.

I am PC, and here is a link to Hi8 Capture via a TRV520 (firewire) using Scenalyzer. This is a PC only product that is discontinued, but still available, free, and works on Win10.

Re: Importing DV tape Video from sony DCR-HC24E to Windows 10

I have a bunch of tapes to be digitized, and if I were a Mac user, I'd buy a used PC just for this purpose. Power is not as important as the firewire port on the motherboard.

If you capture with a pc you get avi.

Avi is not supported on a mac anymore if I am not misstaken.

Ah, yes. Do you recall; did the Mac users who were posting find a way to use the .dv captured files in newer PR?

Scenalyzer does have a few choices for capture filetype, but I don't know if any are Mac compatible.
