CC 2018- Uses 100% memory causes computer to crash

Hello,

I updated to premiere pro 2018 and started a brand new project.  I imported my cameras as I normally do and then wait for premiere pro to conform the data.  But unfortunately while doing I get memory warnings and then my entire computer crashes.

I tried opening the project again and watching the memory usage and sure enough it climbs all the way up to 98%.  Even though it is a fresh project and I have not made any sequences or done any actual editing.  All I have done is imported my footage as I have normally done in previous versions.

I have noticed that the problem is specifically happening when premiere pro is conforming .MTS files

Windows 10: Version 1703

Intel i7-5820 3.3GHZ

I started having this problem a few months ago as well, I've tried trans coding to another format using adobe media encoder with several different formats, its super slow and the audio and video don't sync up properly if i do get a completed file.

Hi MatthewD,

Do you have the same issue if the footage is transcoded to an intermediate codec prior to editing with it? Let us know.

Thanks,
Kevin

I will have to give that a try.

I am having the exact same problem with AVCHD (.MTS) footage. It sort of gets stuck on conforming but then consumes every bit of memory that my PC (Windows 10) can give it- well beyond the limits that I set in preferences.

I've noticed this to be true for opening existing projects where I have cleared the Media Cache, as well as importing footage into new projects.

The disk the footage is on is also busy 100%. The frustrating bit is that it takes forever to shut Premiere down after it gets like this. I forced quit it through task manager and it takes a good 15 minutes just to go away and for everything to calm down.

Another one of my editors was having the same issue on another machine.

I'm installing the 2017 version for now and am going to wait this one out.  This is frustrating, but I should have known better than to update right away. It seems like it always takes Adobe a few months to sort this stuff out. The good thing is that the 2018 version is so broken for me that I've not been able to do any work in it anyway, so no loss on my end.

I had a very similar problem but was about to start a few projects and didn't want any issues so I just re-installed 2017.  Have you had any luck with 2018?  I want to know when it's safe to "get back in the water".

I've seen similar during conforming.  I would file a bug report.
