I am trying to do work in premiere 2020 and its super laggy i cant even edit a video because it was so laggy, is anyone else having these issues?!

Sam,

I had previously warned other users about mismatching the relative performance of the GPU with regards to that of the CPU. Many of the users that I responded to - and I am currently guilty of that myself - combined a relatively powerful CPU with a relative weakling of a GPU. Your system is clearly the opposite: That GPU is clearly overqualified for the CPU that you're using. Premiere Pro really works best when the relative performances of both the CPU and the GPU are closely matched. However, that RTX 2080 Ti significantly outperforms that i7-9700K, making that build just a waste of money as configured.

Still, that does not explain the fact that Premiere Pro itself could have been better-engineered than the half-baked agglomeration that it currently is.

Hey!
Just try to enable Hardware Accelerated Decoding in Preferences>Media!
Working fine for me with h.264 files now! Seems like this setting is needed now for this codecs.

This is enabled and still preforms horribly. One thing I did notice was switching GPU acceleration back from Metal to Open CL. Its def. not a 100% fix, but Open CL gives me better playback. Which is really weird because in PP 2019 I was using Metal with no issues.

I just can't believe there's this many issues. My speedy iMac Pro, Terrablock RAID and GPU should have zero issues playing back even the worst codec. I mean, I was playing down ProRes 4K at full Res. and this can't handle H.264 at full HD. Not really apples to apples, due to codec interframe vs. long GOP, but still. Never any issues before 2020. It's so strange to me.

Same problem here, just adding to the issue to show it's not a minor bug. Have tried working with same clips in both 2020 and 2019 -- 2019 works perfectly, 2020 is totally unusable. Timeline responsiveness can be upwards of 5 seconds between input and playback.

I tried calling support, their fix does not work. I tried other solutions I have used in the past, those also do not work. Clearly, somewhere along the line somebody made a mistake when other issues were being tweaked in the 2020 verison of premiere. I have given up on using 2020 and I have reverted to 2019 until this issue is resolved. I have no clue how it got this badly messed up in one generational change.

Yeah, it's the same here. We are working mostly on a new iMac Pros and the timeline lag in 2020 is driving everyone crazy. It's easily 5 sec before playback with just a basic HD resolution material. We have had problems with long timelines and source files before in Premiere, but this time it's almost unusable. Like many others here, we also switched back to 2019 just to get basic editing done. I really hope that we get a fix to 2020 soon!

Update: The problem for us seems to be with the projects from 2019. It's definitely much better if you create a new project in 2020 and copy-paste sequence from 2019 instead of updating the project. Also, remember to delete and generate new cache files in 2020. I was a bit hasty with the critique above, but anyway, the timeline feels normal and snappy enough now. Hope others find this helpful.

Same issue - Ryzen 9 3900x, 64gb RAM, 2080ti - trying to edit game footage captured at 1440p, 60fps, but can't even get Premiere running quick enough to edit my audio track (a 15 minute long WAV file)

Same issue, Running RTX 5000 with i9, 64gb RAM. Unusable.

In regards to bellPost's post, I have used all manner of formats with the same terrible performance in 2020.
I have always used CineForm as my main codec without issue back to the early 2000's, to have such a performance issue with an intermediate such as CineForm in the 2020 version (and 2019 too compared to 2017 and 2018 12.0) tells me it ain't the dang file format/codec, it's Premiere's coding gone completely awry. A small update did come down the last time I went back to my Windows 10 image and probably tried to band-aid a few dynamic link library files as a fix but it did nothing that I could feel to fix the overwhelmingly bad responsiveness.

Premiere Pro 2020 is GOD AWFUL slow.

It lags on playback on plain white text over black background.

It lags on everything I've thrown at it. I used to be able to play down RED RAW footage at 1/2 quality with no issues. Now it can't even play simple video files. Its completely unusable as a NLE at this point. It really makes want to go back to Avid. Why release a update with so many issues. My iMac Pro has plenty of power and plays down ProRes even compressed mp4 files no problem in older versions of PP. 2020 is awful.

Yes. I just did that this morning to 14.0.1. I'm on a MAC OSX 10.14.6.

Created a new project, then imported the old one from CC19. It's better now.

Same problem for me. Extremely laggy on i9 9900K, 32 GB RAM, RTX2070. Had no issues at all with cc2019, but cc2020 is lagging crazy, even when making new projects. Any suggestions?

Install 2018, I did just to try and it works flawless. Really fast, snappy, no crashes.

Export your projects as XML files and your are good to go!

Same issues here. Doing an onsite quick turn highlight edit almost ended in disaster this week. Going back and forth from a Razer Blade with i7 6700/32GB RAM/RTX2080 eGPU and my desktop with an OC'd 7900x/64GB RAM/4x 1080tis. Can't even get realtime playback. I hit spacebar and it takes a solid 20 seconds to start up. Scrubbing through the timeline is near impossible and most of the time if I move the playhead it takes a good 60 seconds to update the preview window. All of this on a single stream of Sony F7 footage. Can't use my NVidia cards/ GPU playback because the preview will just go black after a few minutes and won't come back until I restart premiere. This isn't a usable editing app anymore.

Dear Adobe,

Do you guys don't care anymore ? Whats going on....

This version (2020) is so extremely buggy, it's slow, crashes, at one point my sound is gone and won't come back, glitches, its like going back 10 years ago, the time when just looking at the application made it crash, Adobe its the year 2020.

There are so many people complaining about premiere, all the editors i know switched back to 2019 and a lot switch to Avid and Blackmacig, i just reinstalled Avid again.... so long adobe.

Thanks for listening Adobe........

Exactly!!! I lost thousands of pounds because of Adobe it's ridiculous.

Simple jobs become nightmares, days of work that I can't charge my clients for. I have been under so much stress lately. Adobe has lost it, it's not stable and not reliable.

The speeds are crap, I had problems in every version, I can't save unless I create new files, just trying to open the export windows crashes the adobe, when editing I can't click or do anything unless I close it and open, preview is slow and stuttery and so on. The best part is that adobe can't ever help fixing anything.

I will start my jorney to Davinci, it's impossible to work like this, I feel like i am a tech support constantly fixing problems, I am already 2 days behing on my new project.

Complete waste of money.

It is now January and colleagues and I are still having massive problems to the point where Premiere is nigh on unusable - like others here am looking to move to Resolve as a result. PP2019 crashed all the time, but at least you could actually edit something on it. Getting really fed up with buggy Adobe updates.

I just had to go back to the 2018 version. It's so much smoother and fast. Day and night difference, I am about to have a big job with multi cam but Davinci resolve is really bad for that.

2018 works perfect!

By changing the Renderer to Mercury Playback Engine Software Only I can now work, but it is not ideal.  This happens every single time Adobe updates.  For what I pay for this subscription, I am close to transitioning to a MAC with FinalCut.  I don't have time for this.

Just amazing how consequent Adobe ignores this topic. Feels great to know my money is well invested... I think I'm switching to Davinci Resolve.

I will try Davinci Resolve for a bit. Then make a decision. I have been using adobe software for 11 years...

They should just make things work and not rip us off. I am sick of spending hours trying to fix bugs.

One thing that helped me was clearing out my PTX folder. On Mac, its: Mac Hard Drive / Users / your user / Library / Application Support / Adobe / Common / PTX.

(I did this in addition to clearing out my media cache folder)

I had 14k files built up in there. Seems to have sped things up. For now.
