Clarity and Dynamics in Essential Sound

Hi, whenever I use either Clarity or Dynamics in a clip with Essential Sound/Dialogue enabled, the resulting output always sounds weird. It's almost like the effect is phasing in over time, so each clip starts playing normally, and then within a second or two, the effect fully kicks in but you can hear the transition as it happens. When you have a lot of small clips, the phasing in happens over and over which sounds terrible. All I wanted to do was remove some of the hum/background noise from my mic recording. Any ideas?
