clicking sequences in prioject panel won't open them in timeline panel in premiere

When clicking to open a sequence, Premiere hangs and it won’t show up in the timeline panel. Even if you click a second sequence, it won’t show up, until you click a sequence in the Project panel that is already open in the timeline. Also, when they do finally show up, it will often not give me the hamburger menu or the “X” option to close the sequence on sequences I’ve opened.
