Question

Close Captions from SRT file not appearing in VLC or other players

Hi

Close Captions made in Premiere Pro 25.1.0, exported as .SRT sidecar file.  - this on Mac Studio running Sonomo 14.2.1

SRT file named the same as the video file / in the same folder

Video file (ProRes 4444, 25fps,) has same QT timecode as SRT file.

PLaying in VLC, Track 1 appears in Subtitle list, but after selection no close captions are displayed. Have uploaded it separately as external subtitle file and this makes no difference.

The .SRT file has extra information on position and colour and I am wondering if that is causing the issue?

Or is it in the way that the captions were first created in Premiere?

An example section from SRT is below. Any pointers gratefully received.

Thanks.

Ben

Hey Ben,

Welcome to the forum. Have you checked if the SRT file is saved with UTF-8 encoding. That might be an issue. Let us know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the reply.

There's no option for encoding on SRTs from Premiere, but I has put the SRT file through a UTF-8 translator utility to see if it made any difference - and it didn't.

Sigh, so driving me a little nuts. Trying to get this done for a festival submission.

I may try exporting the captions at the same time as the video file to see if that makes any difference.

But if you have any other thoughts?

Thanks.

Unfortunately exporting the captions at the same as the video - as a sidecar file - makes no difference. I switched off the SRT styling too.
